In yet another example of unethical behavior to prove why Donald Trump should not be President of the United States, the Trump Organization has just come under fire for taking $500 million from the Chinese government to fund a project in Indonesia. This is illegal and a direct violation of the Emoluments Clause due to the president’s involvement in the organization.
Earlier today, White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah was grilled over the money from China, and couldn’t defend Trump at all. You could practically see the panic washing over his face as a reporter asked him:
The Trump Organization is involved in a project in Indonesia building hotels and golf course, residences. It is getting up to $500 million in backing from the Chinese government. Can you tell — or explain the administration’s perspective on, a, how this wouldn’t violate the emoluments clause, and, B, how it wouldn’t violate the president’s own promise that his private organization would not be getting involved in new foreign deals while he was president?”
Shah was at a loss for words and unable to explain how it wasn’t a violation. He simply said:
I’ll have to refer you to the Trump Organization.”
The reporter followed up and pressed Shah again:
No. But I mean the Trump Organization can’t speak on behalf of the president as the president, the head of the federal government, the one who is responsible, who needs to assure the American people.”
Shah refused to give a straight answer:
You’re asking about a private organization’s dealings that may have to do with a foreign government. That’s not something that I can speak to.”
You can watch this heated exchange below:
Despite the fact that he promised America that he would separate himself from his organizations, Trump has yet to follow through – and because he is still involved with the Trump Organization, that money from China is illegal. Article I Sec. 9 of the Constitution prohibits “Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under [the United States]” from accepting “any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.”
That’s exactly what Trump did! And now that we know the Chinese government gave Trump $500 million, Trump’s recent announcement to help Chinese telecom ZTE makes a lot more sense. Trump is corrupt as hell, and although the GOP refuses to do anything about it, at least reporters are calling him out.
