Donald Trump was so excited to do his call-in interview with Fox and Friends this morning that I think maybe he forgot to rehearse his talking points.
Of course, there’s the rub: Donald Trump doesn’t rehearse. He prides himself on speaking off-the-cuff, even if everyone around him is advising him not to do that kind of thing. And honestly, Trump should be taking that advice — during the conversation this morning, he rather casually admitted that both he and his lawyer Michael Cohen have been lying to federal investigators this entire time about the “crazy Stormy Daniels deal” by copping to the fact that Cohen represented him in that case, which is contrary to everything they’ve ever said about it as recently as, like, a week ago.
But that wasn’t even the only illegal activity that Trump admitted to in this absolutely off-the-rails interview.
During another segment, co-host Brian Kilmeade asked the president whether his frustration with the Russia probe being carried out by the Special Counsel ever makes him want to “talk to Mueller and put an end to it,” and Trump launched into a screaming two-minute rant that concluded with him essentially saying he intends to meddle more aggressively in the affairs of the Department of Justice.
Trump has famously been furious at Jeff Sessions for having recused himself in the Russia investigation, since it was partly Sessions’ advice that led him to fire James Comey, which led directly to the appoint of Mueller’s legal team in the first place.
But it’s not every day that you see the President of the United States say on live television that he plans on obstructing justice:
Now, normally when you see “loses his mind” in the headline of an article like this, you assume it might be hyperbole. But you can hear it in the video — he almost lost his voice as well, he was screaming so hard into his telephone. And because he was simply repeating long-debunked garbage about Lisa Page and Peter Strzok and Andrew McCabe, even the hosts on Fox and Friends tried to cut him off before he could say anything else terribly damaging to his presidency.
It’s a little late for that, guys.
