It’s a rare event that something positive actually happens during the presidency of Donald Trump — but when it does, you can be sure that Trump will find a way to ruin it.
Last night, three American hostages that were being held by North Korea were released and allowed to come home to the United States. This was a major move by North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, who is currently in negotiations for peace with South Korea’s new president Moon Jae-In.
Two of the three hostages had been incarcerated by the regime during Trump’s administration, even though the unhinged president falsely blamed the whole thing on former President Barack Obama. As Kim Dong-Chul, Tony Kim and Kim Hak-song were finally released and given a warm welcome, Trump could hardly wait for his turn in the spotlight to ruin the entire ceremony. Once again proving that the only thing Trump cares about is his ratings and popularity, Trump gloated:
I think you probably broke the all-time in history television rating for 3 o’clock in the morning.”
It was a disgusting exploitation of the powerful moment, but something we’ve come to expect from Trump. Trump also said something rather insensitive in regards to Kim Jong-Un:
We want to thank Kim Jong-Un, who really was excellent to these three incredible people.”
“Excellent” is not a word we would choose here — hostage Kim Dong-Chul had been sentenced to ten years in a labor camp! And one hostage “recounted his time in captivity, describing long days in labor camps but [added] that he had received medical treatment when needed.” Trump should have just kept his mouth shut.
While this is a big upgrade from the time Trump threatened North Korea with “fire and fury,” the president still has a long way to go. When will Trump understand that his best strategy for fixing his presidency is to just shut the hell up? You can watch Trump mess things up below:
