It’s as if they are ashamed because they have blood on their hands or something.
59 people are dead and over 500 wounded after an old white guy committed an act of terrorism in Las Vegas on Sunday evening.
22,000 people were enjoying a Harvest Festival concert outside when the shooter opened fire with a fully automatic machine gun from his hotel room. Chaos reigned as people fled for their lives.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the National Rifle Association has remained silent and Republican lawmakers have only offered thoughts and prayers instead of talking about gun control measures that would prevent future mass shootings.
Indeed, House Republicans are currently considering legislation that would loosen restrictions on silencers, a move that would have led to even more deaths in Las Vegas because people started running because they heard the gunshots. If the shooter had been able to use a silencer, the death toll would have been horrifically higher.
But, of course, Republicans don’t want to talk about guns. In fact, they went so far as to refuse to appear on MSNBC’s Morning Joe to make sure they didn’t have to talk about it.
Mika Brzezinski informed viewers on Tuesday morning that many Republicans were asked to appear on the show, but they all gutlessly refused.
“We just want to mention that we did ask a number of Republicans to be on this morning, because you’re seeing a lot of Democratic lawmakers joining us this morning, and they all declined,” Brzezinski said.
Indeed, Democratic lawmakers courageously appeared on the show to talk about the mass shooting and offer real actions our nation can take to prevent future mass shootings.
Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy pointed out that just renewing the assault weapons ban would cut down on mass shootings.
“Let’s be clear,” Murphy began. “The pace of the epic mass shootings, 10 or more people being killed, doubled after the assault weapons ban expired. That’s not a coincidence.”

Murphy went on to call for immediate change because mass shootings are the just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to gun deaths in America, citing gun violence in Chicago and Baltimore as examples. Our country suffers the most gun deaths in the world and we also have weaker gun control laws than most nations. It’s unacceptable and needs to change. But as long as we continue to let the National Rifle Association control lawmakers, people are going to continue being killed by weapons that should not be in the hands of anyone who isn’t in the military.
Republicans did not even bother appearing on the show because they are obeying their NRA masters. But thoughts and prayers won’t stop the next mass shooting. Only stricter gun laws can prevent them. Just ask Australia, a nation that has not had a mass shooting in over 20 years because they enacted stricter gun laws.
