Gunfire broke out at one of Donald Trump’s golf clubs by a man who draped the U.S. flag over a counter in what was described as an attempt to lure officers to that part of the facility. The police were called to Trump’s Doral hotel and golf club at around 1:30 a.m. on Friday morning with reports from staff of shots being fired. Officials say the suspect, 42-year-old Jonathan Oddi, had been “yelling” and “spewing some information” about Donald Trump.
Oddi was wounded after exchanging fire with responding officers, according to Heavy.com. Miami-Dade police Director Juan Perez said they are trying to determine what Oddi’s motives were in the shooting that left five officers and the suspect injured.
“He had an American flag that he did drape over the counter,” Perez said. “That all was part of the investigation. We’re going to take it from there and see what his real motives are and how far we get into that point, and then we’ll have that discussion with the FBI to see how far this goes. This was a definite attempt to lure officers into the lobby of that hotel.”
“We don’t know what his intentions were in the long term but we know what he was doing at the time — he was trying to engage our police officers in some kind of ambush-type attack,” Perez continued, according to ABC News.
In regards to the ambush, Perez added, “He did succeed and he did lose.”
Oddi reportedly fired shots into the ceiling and waited for police officers to arrive, he said. Police arrived and quickly exchanged gunfire with the suspect.
“You know, these officers did not hesitate one second to engage this individual that was actively shooting in the lobby of the hotel,” Perez said. “They risked their lives knowing that they had to get in there to save lives in that hotel.”
In late February, following the Parkland high school massacre, Trump said, “I really believe I’d run in there even if I didn’t have a weapon,” so you know he would have taken Oddi down with his bare hands.
Meanwhile, there is an active shooter at a high school in Texas right now but our gun-saturated country does not have a problem with guns, according to conservatives.
