Once again, Donald Trump has left his own country in the dark, only communicating his plans in secrecy. Earlier today, Trump told Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, that he is planning on withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal. America will not be hearing from Trump on this until later this afternoon, when he plans on making the official announcement (both on and off of Twitter).
As per the New York Times, Trump will speak on the 2015 nuclear agreement at 2 p.m., formally announcing his decision to withdraw. Trump will also be placing harsh sanctions on the Iranian regime and “impose additional economic penalties as well.”
This has been heavily advised against by Trump’s own aides, but when has Trump ever followed the advice of those more experienced and competent than himself?!
The Times wrote:
Mr. Trump’s decision unravels the signature foreign policy achievement of his predecessor, Barack Obama, isolating the United States among its allies and leaving it at even greater odds with its adversaries in dealing with the Iranians.
The president’s own aides had persuaded him twice last year not to take this step.”
Unfortunately, Trump has a more “hawkish set of advisors now”, which include Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton, and these men are all for Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.
Trump’s decision is certainly unpopular. Yesterday, Germany and France vowed to stand by the nuclear agreement regardless of the United States’ position.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said:
We don’t think there is any justifiable reason to pull out of this agreement and we continue to make the case for it to our American friends.”
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian agreed:
We are determined to save this deal because this accord safeguards against nuclear proliferation and is the right way to stop Iran getting a nuclear weapon.”
Once again, Trump is isolating America.
