On Monday, President Donald Trump singled out newly appointed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during a Rose Garden ceremony honoring the football team for the U.S. Military Academy, the top diplomat’s alma mater.
While introducing Pompeo, Trump and his self-absorbed ego pointed out that Pompeo is receiving “more publicity” than he is. Of course, Trump neglected to mention that much of the attention that Pompeo’s been getting has been over the fact that no Secretary of State has ever been confirmed by a slimmer margin, nor even confirmed without a “positive” vote from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee — that is to say, one Democrat had to be convinced to change his vote to “present” so that the nomination could even pass to the full Senate for approval.
The so-called president then awkwardly added that Pompeo has been very busy.
He’s been a busy guy. How’s everything going? Good? I think better than people even understand. Good job, Mike.”

Trump never fails to mention if someone is getting more press coverage than him. Just last month, Trump claimed his national security adviser John Bolton was receiving “all the credit” for a missile strike on Syria.
The president hates to be upstaged, especially by members of his own cabinet. Instead of boasting about Pompeo’s achievements and reassuring Americans that he can successfully take over the State Department after replacing Rex Tillerson, with whom Trump frequently clashed with during his first year in office, he continues to shine the spotlight back on himself. The self-proclaimed billionaire constantly needs to make everything about him in order to avoid bruising his ego.
